ABOUT US
Rooted in History, Baked With Love
Grove Street Bakery has been a cherished part of the Bloomington community since 1996. Originally founded by Dale and Mary Jones, then lovingly run by Parker and Peggy Boyes, the bakery is now led by owner Elizabeth Kalafut. With a fresh “country chic” look and the same beloved recipes, we’re proud to carry on the legacy of scratch-made treats and neighborly service. From famous sugar cookies to piping hot cinnamon rolls, everything is made with care and crafted to delight. We’re not just a bakery—we’re a place where memories are made and shared, one pastry at a time.

What makes Grove Street Bakery different?
What sets Grove Street Bakery apart is more than just our recipes—it’s our history, our values, and our connection to the Bloomington community. Since 1996, we’ve been baking from scratch using classic techniques and time-tested flavors that customers return for again and again. Our bakery isn’t a franchise or chain—it’s a neighborhood staple that’s grown alongside generations of loyal patrons. We’re also proudly woman-owned and LGBTQ+ friendly, which means inclusivity isn’t just something we talk about—it’s something we live every day. Customers feel that difference the moment they walk through our doors. You’ll find friendly service, a cozy “country chic” atmosphere, and treats that taste like they were made just for you. Whether you’re a regular or a first-time visitor, Grove Street Bakery offers a warm welcome, handcrafted quality, and a heartfelt commitment to doing things the right way—one cookie, roll, or cake at a time.
Is the bakery still using the same recipes?
Absolutely. One of the most important promises we’ve made—and kept—is to preserve the beloved recipes that made Grove Street Bakery a community favorite in the first place. Since our founding in 1996, our scratch-made cinnamon rolls, donuts, cookies, and muffins have become a daily ritual for many locals. While the bakery is now under new ownership, we’ve remained fully committed to honoring those original recipes. That means the same handmade buttercream, the same soft sugar cookies, the same from-scratch doughs, and the same techniques passed down from one set of hands to the next. Customers who’ve been coming here for decades can still count on their favorites tasting exactly the way they remember. In fact, many regulars tell us they can spot one of our sugar cookies just by the look and smell alone. It’s not nostalgia—it’s the real thing, baked fresh every morning.
What does “country chic” mean for the bakery?
“Country chic” is more than a design style—it’s a feeling. At Grove Street Bakery, we’ve adopted a cozy, vintage-inspired aesthetic that reflects our handmade approach to baking and our affection for tradition. The term captures the charm of an old-school bakery combined with warm, welcoming details that feel timeless. You’ll notice soft, dusty pink accents, wood tones, classic display cases, and small touches that make the space feel both homey and refined. This aesthetic is a natural extension of our brand: we’re rooted in history, guided by artistry, and inspired by the joy of serving others. Everything about our bakery—from the warm smell of cinnamon rolls in the morning to the heartfelt service behind the counter—is designed to make customers feel at home. Country chic isn’t just how we decorate; it’s how we bake, how we serve, and how we treat every person who walks through our door.
Is Grove Street Bakery a woman-owned business?
Yes, Grove Street Bakery is proudly a woman-owned business. In August 2025, Elizabeth Kalafut took over ownership with a vision to honor the bakery’s long-standing traditions while adding a fresh perspective. As a woman-owned business, Grove Street Bakery is dedicated to fostering an inclusive, community-focused environment that is filled with heart. We proudly identify as LGBTQ+ friendly and a transgender safe space, reflecting our belief that everyone deserves to feel welcome and respected when they walk through our doors. Our team is comprised of passionate individuals who value kindness, creativity, and connection—and these values are woven into everything we do. Supporting a woman-owned business means supporting leadership that values empathy, quality, and authentic community ties. At Grove Street Bakery, it’s not just about baked goods—it’s about being a positive force in the neighborhood we serve, every day. We’re honored to carry that responsibility with care and gratitude.
Can I meet the owner or staff?
Absolutely! Grove Street Bakery is more than just a place to grab a sweet treat—it’s a place to connect. Our owner, Elizabeth Kalafut, and the rest of our team are often behind the counter, in the kitchen, or out front, welcoming customers. We take pride in being a real neighborhood bakery where guests know the faces behind the aprons. Whether you’re coming in for your daily cinnamon roll or planning a custom cookie order, we’re always happy to chat. We believe in building relationships, not just transactions. That means listening to your ideas, sharing a laugh over the counter, and making sure every interaction feels personal. Our team loves getting to know our regulars—and welcoming new ones, too. So yes, come say hello, tell us about your favorite flavor, or just stop in to see the friendly faces that make Grove Street Bakery what it is.
